A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, as his first important novel, is abundant in meaning that can never

2、be fully explained. Although all those countless interpretations and comments in existence do lead to better understandings of this novel, none of them has actually exhausted its meaning. In another sense, the existence of such interpretations can also assure readers of the enormous possibilities an

3、d great potentials to further understand A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Ever since its publication as a book in 1916, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, a book frequently bought but seldom read, has received showers of criticisms, either positive or negative, and it is true that few

4、novels have been questioned so deeply, so persistently and so impressively. For over four decades, an untold number of essays and monographs on James Joyce and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man have come out, pushing the jungle of Joyce study far behind. “The Joyce Industry” takes on a new app

5、earance with more and more scholars and students joining the enterprise.While the image approaches constitute the form or vesture that the content takes on or clothes in. Although the image techniques are not the only writing skills embodied in the novel, Joyces artful employment of them help to for

6、ge the haphazard, fragmentary moments of thoughts into consciously meaningful, life-like episodes that can be substantially interpreted. By the dexterous arrangements of the form and content, Joyce succeeds in paralleling the shock of reality in Stephens life with a similar shock for the reader thro

7、ugh the change of style, both of which help to reinforce the impact of the Stephens sudden enlightenment of his life and his awareness of the sordid reality of Dublin. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man marks the turning point in James Joyces writing career. In the novel, Joyce continues his us

8、e of epiphany modes descended from Dubliners, and more importantly, he sets the stream of consciousness, a new literary trend on the go and later brings it to a peak.This thesis falls into five chapters.Chapter one gives a brief introduction to the study and the thesis proper. Chapter Two introduce

9、the author and main plots of the novel. Chapter Three makes a study of the water image. It consists of three major aspects: chaos of consciousness, purification of spirit, resurrection of art. Chapter Four analyzes the three woman image. Chapter Five concludes the thesis. It also makes clear the lim

10、itations of the research and offers suggestions for further study.This thesis is only a tentative approach to understanding A Portrait from image perspective. This analysis expects to further demonstrate that image is an effective way in analyzing the theme of literary works. It can also display the

11、 relationship between the theme and style, and provide objective evidence, enabling readers to understand and appreciate the significance and artistic value of literary works better.II. The Author and Main Plots of the NovelIf a poll were to be taken among author critics and scholars to choose the g

12、reatest writer of the twentieth century, the likeliest name to emerge at the top of the list would be that of James Joyce. As one of the great literary pioneers of the twentieth century, Joyce makes extensive and convicting use of a stylistic form called image, a type of writing in which the written

13、 prose seeks to mirror the thoughts and perceptions of particular characters rather than rendering them in an objective external portrait.Joyce was born in a well-to-do family in 1882. John Joyce inherits property from his father and gets an easy and well-paid job in the office of the Collector of R

14、ates for Dublin. Her mother, Mary Jane Murray is also from a well-off family. The fathers drunkenness and violence produce chaos in the family while Marys great quality of patience and kindness sets the order. However the prosperity of the family doesnt last long after the birth of their first son,

15、Joyce. Due to John Joyces ill-management and extravagance, with the family property in decline, the Joyce has to live on mortgage. Joyce, not long after birth, has tasted the vicissitudes of life when they have to move from place to place, which is deeply buried in his childhood memory. For him, the

16、 concept of home is nothing but a series of continuous crisis, poverty and deterioration. However, his bond with his father doesnt change.John Joyce has the highest opinion of his eldest son and is determined to give him the best education in Ireland regardless of the family poverty. Joyce is the only one of the children who gets along well with his father. The bond is strengthened with time when the father pushes his son forward by providing him with the favorable resources in
