2、策略来构建各自的性别身份。基于语言在性别构建中所起的重要作用,语言学界便有了“男性语言”和“女性语言”之分。而性别与语言的研究和女性语言的研究是语言学界永恒的课题。 本文以探讨中国女性语言特点为目的,设定一对中国中年夫妇的交谈以及妻子和其女性同事的对话等为观察对象,通过多案研究描述女性在日常交际中的独特的言语倾向。本文假设女性在不同的场合下、与不同的对象交流时往往会体现出不同的话语风格。观察结果支持这一假设。 作者对其身边的若干名大学英语教师进行了长期的观察,采集了许多自然、可信的语料。此外,还运用了随身听、手机、因特网等新型工具,进一步验证假设。通过细致地整理、描述和分析所收集的大量语料,作

3、者发现女性在不同的语境下的一些语言特点。一般来说,女性在公共场合往往是少言寡语,语言得体。而在与丈夫、朋友交往时又会展现出不同的语言倾向:用儿语、说粗话、好品评、爱唠叨、讲笑话。诚然,其中有些特点也许对女性在人们心目中的美好和高雅的形象有所改变,但是了解女性在交际过程2 论女性语言的倾向 Womens Tendencies in the Use of Language 中表现出的种种语言趋向有助于男性更好地了解女性,女性更深刻地认识自我,进而使女性之间和两性之间的交际愉快而成功。 本文共分五章。第一章为文献回顾,总结了性别与语言尤其是女性语言研究的主要成果,并从研究范围这一视角进行了简要回顾,

4、 最后界定了几个基本概念。第二章介绍研究方法。第三章从五个方面描述和分析了女性语言的倾向性,并探讨了产生这些现象的原因。第四章陈述本研究的发现, 并对其进行细致地分析和讨论。第五章在总结原文的基础上,进一步指出本文的理论意义、实际意义和局限性,并对今后本领域的研究提出建议。 3 论女性语言的倾向 Womens Tendencies in the Use of LanguageAbstractIt is widely recognized that women and men differ in their communication styles. They tend to employ in

5、tentionally or unintentionally different discourse strategies to construct their respective gender identity in the course of communication. In view of the important role that language plays in gender construction, there exists the distinction between “men language ” and “ womens language” in the wor

6、ld of linguistics. And the study of language and gender/sex as well as the research on womens language become permanent topics of linguisticsThe present thesis aims to probe into the characteristics of Chinese women s languageThe study mainly selects the talk of a Chinese couple and conversations be

7、tween the wife and her female colleagues as the target of observation, and describes through a multiple-case study women s unique speech tendencies in their daily interactions. It is assumed that women prefer different discourse styles on particular occasions, and the results support the assumptionT

8、he author made long-term observations of a number of college English teachers around him, and collected plenty of natural and reliable data. Besides, a walkman, mobile phones and the Internet were employed as new means of communication to testify the hypotheses. By sorting out, describing and analyz

9、ing the data meticulously, the writer found some language features of women in different contexts. Generally, women are less talkative, or use appropriate language in public. On the other hand, women show different language tendencies such as using childish talk, speaking vulgar language, telling jo

10、kes, making critical remarks, being garrulous and so on. It is true that some of the features may affect women s beautiful and graceful images slightly. But to get some idea of women s tendencies in the use of language helps men better understand women, and women better know themselves, and then lea

11、ds to a pleasant and successful communication between women and menThis thesis consists of five chapters. In Chapter One, the major achievements in the study of language and gender, especially women s language, are summarized; a brief literature review is given from the scope of the study; and sever

12、al basic terms are defined. Chapter Two introduces the methodology of the study. In Chapter Three, the author describes and analyzes women s tendencies of language use from five perspectives, and approaches the possible reasons for these linguistic phenomena. In Chapter Four, the major findings are

13、given and further analyzed and discussed. 14、tudy was undertaken to find out from daily life some of the striking but less-mentioned features of women s tendencies in the use of language. It is known from linguistic research that in many societies the speech of men and women differs Peter Trudgill, 1974. Numerous linguists and researchers have

15、 been exploring the differences between the speech of men and women, and they have come up with plenty of significant findings and advanced quite a few valuable theories 0.1 According to Robin Lakoff 1975, women s language refers to the language used by women and about women. Language used about women bears negative connotations, and this phenomenon is called linguistic sexism or androcentrism. Sexism in language can be demonstrated with many different kinds of evidence. Words for women have negative connotations, even where the corresponding mal
