3、m visit, i an still reall the sener; i an still reall the ater i sa at the reservoir. it as pure, lean and blue, not like the ater i sa in the middle reahes of the river, hih had turned bron and mudd after passing through the loess plateau. one during our sta at the poer station, e ere aught in a th
4、understorm. and hen rain stopped, i ould see trikles of ater rolling don mountain slopes and floing into the reservoir. it arried little mud or sand, beause at that time, trees and grass still gre around the reservoir. and the proteted the soil. at longang xia i as struk b the beaut of 第 2 页nature,
5、and as a hild i anted to sta there and to gro up ith our ello river. li bai, the tang dnast poet, said praises to the floing ater in the ello river. he sa it as ing don from heaven and nurturing the people along her a to the sea. hoever, in 1997,for 330das, not a single drop of ater from the ello ri
6、ver ent into the sea. and droughts are not the onl punishment b nature. a friend of m father s, a universit professor, is doing researh on the ello river. aording to this professor, the ello river ill soon hange its ourse if e allo this situation to ontinue. beause there is no longer enough ater to

9、 hen i as visiting australia ith a group of hinese students ho had on prizes in an english skills test, our australian hosts invited us to join them for a horse-ride in the mountains. after to hours on horsebak, e 第 3 页reahed a valle, here there as a most beautiful meado, ith floers in all olors dot
10、ted on a huge blanket of green. hen i began to praise the beaut of nature, m friends told me that in this valle, there used to be a big mine and the asteater from the mine turned everthing bron. hen the mine as abandoned, people made great efforts to restore the green vegetation. the also used the l
11、atest biologial tehnolog hoosing the best grass seeds suitable for the loal soil. so the beautiful meado is a result of mitment, hard ork, and ne tehnolog. hat happened to this valle in australia should also happen to our ello river and, in fat, it is happening. i have seen farmers planting trees on
12、 mountains along the ello river. i have seen them limb the mountain tops ith seedlings on their shoulders beause the had no mahiner. i have seen them pour on trees the ater the had arried up in bukets from miles don the valle. these farmers are quietl nourishing our ello river, just as the river has nourished them. and these farmers, men and omen i don t kno, gave me the onfidene that e and our ello river ill gro together, and someda in the future, e ill be able to drink the lean ater from our ello river again, beause she is our dearest mother. thank ou.
