2、 kai-shek mr. president, members of the senate of the united states, ladies and gentlemen, i am overhelmed b the armth and spontaneit of the ele of the amerian people, of hom ou are the representatives. i did not kno that i as to speak to ou toda at the senate exept to sa, ho do ou do? i am so ver g
3、lad to see ou, and to bring the greetings to m people to the people of ameria. hoever, just before ing here, the vie president told me that he ould like to have me sa a fe ords to ou. i am not a ver good extemporaneous speaker; in fat, i am no speaker at all; but i am not so ver muh disouraged, beau
4、se a fe das ago i as at hde park, and ent to the president s librar. something i sa there enouraged me, and made me feel that perhaps ou ill not expet overmuh of me in speaking to ou extemporaneousl. hat do ou think i sa there? i sa man things. but the one thing hih interested me most of all as that
5、 in a glass ase there as the first draft of tone of the president s speehes, a seond draft, and on and on up to the sixth draft. esterda i happened to mention this fat to the president, and told him that i as extremel glad that he had to rite so man drafts hen he is suh a ell-knon and aknoledgedl fi
6、ne speaker. his repl to me as that sometimes he rites 12 drafts of a speeh. so, m remarks here toda, being extemporaneous, i am sure ou ill make alloanes for me. the traditional friendship beteen our ountr and mine has a histor of 160 ears. i feel, and i believe that i am no the onl one ho feels thi
7、s a, that there are a great man similarities beteen our people and mine, and that these similarities are the basis of our friendship. i should like to tell ou a little stor hih ill illustrate this belief. hen general doolittle and his men ent to bomb toko, on their return some of our bos had to bail
8、 out in the interior of hina. one of them later told me that he had to mail out of his ship. and that hen he landed on hinese soil and sa the populae running toard him, he just aved his arm and shouted the onl hinese ord he kne, mei-kuo, mei-kuo, hih means ameria, literall translated from the hinese
9、 it means beautiful ountr. this bo said that our people laughed and almost hugged him, and greeted him like a long lost brother. he further told me that the thought that he had e home hen he sa our people; and that as the first time he had ever been to hina. i ame to our ountr as a little girl. i kn
10、o our people. i have lived ith them. i spent the formative ears of m life amongst our people. i speak our language, not onl the language of our hearts, but also our tongue. so ing here toda i feel that i am also ing home. i believe, hoever, that it is not onl i ho am ing home; i feel that if the hin
11、ese people ould speak to ou in our on tongue, or if ou ould understand our tongue, the ould tell ou that basiall and fundamentall e are fighting for the same ause ; that e have identit of ideals that the four freedoms, hih our president prolaimed to the orld, resound throughout our vast land as the
12、gong of freedom, the gong of freedom of the united nations, and the death knell of the aggressors. i assure ou that our people are illing and eager to ooperate ith ou in the realization of these ideals, beause e ant to see to it that the do not eho as empt phrases, but bee realities for ourselves, f
13、or our hildren, for our hildren s hildren, and for all mankind. ho are e going to realize these ideals? i think i shall tell ou a little stor hih just ame to m mind. as ou kno, hina is a ver old nation. e have a histor of 5,000 ears. hen e ere obliged to evauate hanko and go into the hinterland to a
14、rr on and ontinue our resistane against aggression, the generalissimo and i passed one of our fronts, the hangsha front. one da e ent in to the heng-ang mountains, here there are traes of a famous pavilion alled rub-the-mirror pavilion, hih perhaps interest ou to hear the stor of that pavilion. to t

16、e ould aquire grae. the father prior of that temple took a piee of brik and rubbed it against a stone hour after hour, da after da, and eek after eek. the little aolte, being ver oung, sometimes ast his ees around to see hat the old father prior as doing. the old father prior just kept on this ork of rubbing the brik against the stone. so one da the oung aolte said to him, father prior, hat are ou doing da after da rubbing this brik of stone? the father prior replied, i am
