1、1 IntroductionRecent years, China has witnessed its rapid development of civilization, modernization, and globalization, and its contact with the world has become more and more frequent. As we know, our country is involved in a collage of international affairs, among which business affairs are the m

And English, as an international language well-known by people from all over the world, has a great impact on business affairs, so business English is a necessity and we attach great importance to its learning in correspondence with the social development. For the sake of satisfying t

3、he need for business talents and intellectuals, great numbers of courses concerning Business English have been set in many universities, even senior middle schools. However, the present existing Business English learning is far from satisfactory. Therefore, the urgent need for the time being is to i

4、mprove learners cultural awareness and develop their intercultural communication competence in Business English learning, so as to achieve the final goal and real purpose of Business English learning.As we know, greatly influenced by the traditional ways of learning, our Business English learning pu

5、t much more emphasis on the linguistic knowledge rather than communicative competence. Lots of learners still focus most of their attention on business vocabulary or grammatical rules, leading to the fact that they fail to express their ideas and thoughts by means of English in practice, and hence c

6、ausing the miscommunication or failure in the communication. Hence, the writer chooses the influence of lacking knowledge of Intercultural Communication on Business English Learning as the topic of her thesis in order to point out the importance of the knowledge of Intercultural Communication on Bus

8、e respectively introduced in detail, and the study of Business English will be overviewed.2.1 The Features of Business English LearningMark Ellis and Christine Johnson (1994:3) defined that “Business English must be seen in the overall context of English for Specific Purposes, as it shares the impor

9、tant elements of needs analysis, syllabus design, course design, and material selection and development which are common to all fields of work in ESP.” They further explained that what characterizes the language of business is its sense of purpose, social aspects and clear communication. Language is

10、 used to achieve an end, such as doing business, communicating with colleagues, etc. Since BE is an international language, social contacts by BE are often highly ritualized which include some common forms and expressions shared by the people involved in business. BE is generally clear and logical i

11、n order to communicate effectively.Business English is regarded as a “mediating language between the technicalities of particular businesses.and the language of the general public” (Pickett, 1989:5). Pickett (1989) suggests two particular aspects to business communications: communication with the pu

12、blic and communication within a company or between companies. Communication with the public is most likely to be in the first language. Non-native speakers use Business English mainly for inter-company and in international conglomerates, infra-company dealings. Picketts distinction is useful but it

13、fails to cover the increasingly wide range of todays business activities, such as fax transmission, complex L/C operations, etc. Various communication channels, different topics covered and diverse relationships will all affect the choice of Business English. Business English is classified into Engl

14、ish for General Business Purposes (EGBP), and English for Specific Business Purposes (ESBP) (Dudley-Evans and St. John, 1998). 15、 language training school and the course are often extensive in their topic contents and skill cultivations. ESBP courses are run for job-experienced learners, in which a certain aspect of business or some particular skills will be festered. The BE course offered is an EGBP course. Dudley Evans and

16、St. John (1998) argue that the purpose in Business English is not centered on the learner as an individual but as a member of transactional world where the fundamental concern is the exchange of goods or services. We may notice that it is gaining popularity in recent years and becomes the fastest increasing area in ESP. In addition, Business English has an important role in playing in ELT (English Language and Teaching)as such concern is booming among the professionals. B
