4、tory, Department of AnthropologyDepartment of Archaeology and Anthropology was founded in April 1961 under the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, marking the first time that anthropology was taught in a higher educational institution in Korea. Even though the department started with only one full

5、-time professor, Won-Yong Kim, who specialized in archaeology, it offered several cultural anthropology courses. At that time, about 10 students entered the department every year. In 1967, Professor Sang-Bok Han (specializing in economic anthropology) became a full-time professor after serving as a

6、lecturer since 1964. In 1973, the department began offering a masters degree program. In 1975, the department was divided into two programs: Department of Anthropology under the College of Social Sciences and Department of Archaeology under the College of Humanities. At this time, Professor Kwang-Ky

7、u Lee (specializing in ethnology), who was with the Department of Educational Science, College of Education, joined the Department of Anthropology as an associate professor. Professor Sang-Bok Han who was with the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology also became an assistant professor of the n

8、ew department. The Department of Anthropology now stood alone as an independent entity, contributing to the growth of the department. In addition, the departments professors, graduate students and alumni founded the Association of Anthropological Studies, which began publishing the Journal of Anthro

9、pological Research. In 1976, the department demonstrated its development of educational 4quality by conferring its first masters degrees to two students. In the next eight years, the department added four more professors to broaden its academic subfields: Professor Mun-Woong Lee (specializing in cul

10、tural change) in 1977; Professor Kwang-Ok Kim (political anthropology) in 1980; Professor Kyung-Soo Chun (specializing in ecological anthropology) in 1982; and Professor Hahn-Sok Wang (specializing in linguistic anthropology) in 1985. With its expanded faculty, the department turned its focus to the

11、 study of other cultures. Since 1981, 28 undergraduate students have entered the department every year. In 1982, the department began offering a doctoral program. In November 1990, the Institute of Cross-Cultural Studies was founded under the College of Social Sciences. The Institute has offered sym

12、posiums, colloquiums and workshops to further cross-cultural understanding and enriched the department. In 1994, Professor Myung-Suk Oh (specializing in economic anthropology and Southeast Asia) became a joint professor with the department and the Institute of Area Studies. In 1998, Professor Kwang-

13、Kyu LEE retired and Professor Jeong-Won Kang (specializing in folklore) joined the department in 1999. Professor Sang-Bok Han retired in 2000. In 2001, Professor Ik-joo Hwang (specializing in urban anthropology) joined the department and the 40th anniversary of Departments foundation was held. Profe

14、ssor Sunyoung Park joined the department in 2002 and Professor Hyang-Jin Jung joined the department in 2003.
