And now I will introduce my thesis by answering five questions.Q1: whats my study about?This thesis is based on a case study of the application of Thematic Progression in Senior High School English Writing. The research

2、 studies the application of Thematic Progression Theory in senior high school students English writing, or we can say how students can achieve text coherence by using TP patterns. In this thesis, the author aims to answer the following questions:(1) What types of basic TP patterns are mainly used in

3、 the sample compositions?(2) What are the differences between two groups of different-scored compositions in terms of TP patterns?Q2:why this study?(significance)It is of great significance and necessity to prove that senior high school students can produce excellent compositions through learning ho

4、w to choose proper TP patterns so as to achieve coherence of the writing. Though the study of TP is more mature and researchers have considered combining TP with English skills teaching, such as reading, translation and writing etc. The majority of those who study writing mainly focus on theoretical

5、 study; a few of them try to combine theory with practice, analyzing writing of CET and TEM, but rarely exploring senior high school students writing. There are Xiong Yousheng and Zhang Yueyings paper, Huang Huis, Lv Yans, Zhang Lians and Zhang Xingmeis papers that are on practical English teaching

6、and learning. For young learners, their ability to command new knowledge and their adaption is more powerful. Though they may not know anything about TP, they will consciously try to put it into practice under the instruction of their teachers in order to cultivate and promote their writing coherenc

7、e since writing plays such an important role in English learning. Thus, it is extremely significant to carry out this study.Q3.whats my method? Through using text analysis on the compositions and quantitative analysis on the data, the author finds that high-score achievers are more competent to orga

8、nize their compositions through proper selections of TP patterns. Q4.your research procedures.Chapter One introduced briefly the present situation of senior high school students English writing, the TP theory and the significance and goal of this thesis. Chapter Two is a literature review concerning

9、 the development of a theoretical foundation for this thesis, including studies abroad and at home. Chapter Three presents the theoretical basis-Thematic Progression Theory. The discussion of Theme is largely based on the work of Halliday (1994) and some other views are also mentioned. Besides, the

10、concept of thematic progression and different TP models by different prominent linguists are presented. Moreover, the relationship of TP and coherence is mentioned. Chapter Four concerned with the research methodology, including research questions, subjects, data collection and procedure of data ana

11、lysis. Chapter Five is about data analysis through the methods of text analysis on the compositions and quantitative analysis on the data. Attention will be paid on the results and discussion, which include the distribution, frequency and diversity of the TP patterns in different-scored compositions

12、 on the clausal level.Chapter Six concluded the findings, limitations of the study and provided suggestions for teachers.Q5.whats my conclusion(s). Through the study, the research results indicate that: (1) Parallel TP patterns and Concentrated TP patterns are chiefly employed in the sample composit

13、ions. (2) The main difference can be summarized that high-score compositions generally use TP patterns more diversely than low-score compositions. The author also draws the conclusion that coherent compositions are frequently connected with more types of basic Thematic Progression patterns than less coherent compositions. Thats all.
