Thispaperreportstheresultsoftestingfortheseviruses among517catssubmittedtotheRSPCAasstraysfrom Birminghamanditssuburbs,andalsoconsiderstheoccur- renceofriskgroupswithinthispopulationandtheassocia- ti
2、onoftheirvirusstatuswithspecificillnesses. MATERIALSANDMETHODS Cats ThecatstestedwerebroughtintoorpickedupbytheRSPCA collectionserviceatBarnesHill,Birmingham,asstraycats, thatiscatswithnocarerorowner.Atotalof517catswere testedbetweenAugustandDecember1997,andtheycame onlyfromBirminghamanditssurroundi
3、ngsuburbs.To reducesamplingbias,everystraycatreceivedbytheRSPCA hospitalduringthisperiodwastested,whetheritwashealthy orill,andeverystraycatthatcouldbeassessedattheassoci- atedRSPCArehomingcatterywasalsotested.Ninety-nineof thecatsadmittedduringthisperiodwerenottestedowing totheirbeingacutelyillorfo
4、rotherreasons.TheBirmingham RSPCAacceptsallthestraycatsreceivedorcollectedbythe RSPCAintheBirminghamarea;thesampleisthereforerep- resentativeofstraycatswithoutacuteterminaldisease,which arethecatswhicharemostlikelytoberehomed. Theage,sex,breed,tameness,healthstatus,bodycondi- tion,andillnessessuffer
5、edbyeachcatwererecorded. Datacollection Thedetailsofeachcatwererecordedonastandardformand abloodsamplewastaken.Detailedrecordswerekeptbyvet- erinariansonthecatsstateofhealthwhenfirstexaminedand onanydiseasestheyacquiredwhileinthehospitaloratthe rehomingcattery.Theyweredividedintofourgroups:cats that
6、appearedhealthy;catsthatappearedhealthyexceptfor arecenttraumaticillness,forexample,roadtrafficaccidents, acutefracturesinhealthybone,lacerations,missingpartsof orwholelimbsortails,witnessedaccidents,collarinjuriesand ligamentruptures;catssufferingdiseasethatwasprimarily non-traumatic,includinggastr
7、ointestinal,haematological, urinaryandrespiratorydisease,age-relateddisease,tumours, infection-baseddisease,centralnervoussystemandocular diseasewherenotraumaticaetiologycouldbefound-this groupalsoincludedcatswhichmighthavesufferedtrauma butinwhichtheprimaryproblemwasnottraumatic;andcats inwhichthed
8、iseaseaetiologycouldnotbedifferentiated betweentraumaticandnon-traumatic. Thecatswereclassifiedasmaleentire,maleneuteredor female;thefemalecatswereplacedinonegroupbecausein mostcasesitcouldnotbeestablishedwhethertheywere neuteredorentire.Agewasrecordedaskitten(undersix months),sixmonthstotwoyears,tw
9、oyearsto10years,or aged(over10years)asdeterminedbyanexaminationofthe teeth.Breedwasrecordedasdomestic(includingdomestic shorthairsandlonghairs)orpedigree.Thepedigreegroup includedcatsthatmayhavebeenpedigreecrossbutshowed strongpedigreecharacteristics.Thecatswereclassifiedas tame,semiferalorferal,ont
10、hebasisofconsistentbehavioural characteristics,butowingtothesmallnumbers,thesemiferal andferalcatsweregroupedtogetherforstatisticalanalysis. 13、dantibodiestoFIVbytherapidimmuno- migration(RIM)assaytest(Speedcat;Bioveto)accordingto themanufacturersinstructions.TheassaydetectsFeLVanti- genp27andantibodiestoFIVgp41.Mostofthesamplesgave aclearpositiveornegativeresult,thatis,adefinitelinewas producedinthepositivezoneofthekitoritremainedblank. Ho
14、wever,afewsamplesgaveaghostbandwhichwascon- siderablyfainterthanthecontrolband;bandswhichwere onlyslightlyfainterthanthecontrolbandwererecordedas positive. Theremainingbloodwaspostedwithoutrefrigerationto theFelineVirusUnit(FVU)diagnosticlaboratoryatthe UniversityofGlasgowwherethesamplesweretestedfo
15、rFeLV byELISA(Lutzandothers1983).Allthepositivesamplesand anyinwhichtheresultsoftheRIMandELISAdifferedwere examinedbyvirusisolation(Jarrettandothers1982).The sampleswerealsotestedforFIVbyimmunofluorescenceas describedbyPedersenandothers(1987)andanyresultthat didnotagreewiththeRIMwasretestedbyWestern
16、blot(Hosie andJarrett1990).Fourteensampleswerenotretestedasthere wasnotenoughblood.Thesamplesweretestedforanti- bodiestoFCoVbyimmunofluorescenceasdescribedbyAddie andJarrett(1992a).Anysamplesthatshowednon-specific immunofluorescencewereretestedbyWesternblot. Statisticalanalysis Initiallytheresultsforeachviruswerecross-tabulatedagainst thefactorsunderconsiderationonaMicrosoftExcelspread- sheet,andFishersexactprobabilitytestwasusedtoscreen thesefactorsforfurtherconsideration.Univariatelogistic
