1、元宵节,Lantern Festival,General Introduction,The Lantern Festival in China is a festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunar calendar, marking the last day of the lunar New Year celebration. It is also known as the Yuanxiao Festival. It officially ends the Chinese New Year c
2、elebrations.,Why its called “Yuanxiao”?,The 15th day of the 1st lunar month is the Chinese Lantern Festival because the first lunar month is called yuan-month The 15th day is the first night to see a full moon. So the day is also called Yuan Xiao Festival in China.,Origin（起源） of Lantern Festival,The
3、 Lantern Festival dates back to the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 25), it had become a festival with great significance. The origin of Lantern Festival has various versions. Below are the two that are generally agreed on.,Origin of Lantern Festival-1,The Emperor Wen of Han Dynasty directed special
4、attention to this event. He proclaimed（声称） it to be one of the most important celebrations and the ceremony（仪式） would last throughout the night. He demanded everyone should light their candles on that day. Because, he finally won the throne from his half-brothers mother-Queen Lv（吕后）, and he thought
5、it should be memorized.,Throughout the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220), Buddhism （佛教）flourished in China. One emperor（皇帝） heard that Buddhist monks（僧人） would watch sarira（舍利子）, or remains（残留物） from the cremation（火化） of Buddhas body, and light lanterns to worship（敬拜） Buddha on the 15th day of the 1st lun
6、ar month, so he ordered to light lanterns in the imperial palace（皇宫） and temples（寺庙） to show respect to Buddha on this day. Later, the Buddhist rite(仪式) developed into a grand festival （盛大节日）among common people and its influence expanded from the Central Plains to the whole China.,Origin of Lantern
