、 longitudinal spring and one beam element. Materials: Linear structural steel,2, 2015 ANSYS, Inc.,April 16, 2015,Steps to Follow: Launch a WB-Mechanical Session. From the Project page, Utility Menu= File= Restore Archive browse for file “WS1a_connections.wbpz”,Save as File name: “WS1aConnection” Sav

If not, fix this by clicking on Utility MenuUnitsMetric(kg, mm,.),Workshop 1A: Auto Contact Detection,5, 2015 ANSYS, Inc.,April 16, 2015,Return to the project schematic page Double click (or RMB=Edit)

、 on the Model Cell to open Mechanical Session,Workshop 1A: Auto Contact Detection,6, 2015 ANSYS, Inc.,April 16, 2015,Once inside the Mechanical application, verify the working unit system “Unit Metric (mm,kg,N,s,mV,mA)” Expand each folder in the project tree to become familiar with model entities. If beam and spring do not appear in the graphics window, go to “Annotation Preferences” to activate these Remote Boundary Connections graphically.,Workshop 1A: Auto Contact Detection,7, 2015 ANSYS, Inc.

、,April 16, 2015,Execute a solve. After several iterations and bisections, model fails to converge with element formulation error.,Workshop 1A: Auto Contact Detection,8, 2015 ANSYS, Inc.,April 16, 2015,Highlight the Connection Branch and RMB insert “Contact Tool”,Highlight the newly created Contact T

RMB “Generate Initial Contact Results”,Workshop 1A: Auto Contact Detection,9, 2015 ANSYS, Inc.,April 16, 2015,With Contact Tool=”Initial Information” highlighted, scroll down the table of information and examine the calculated properties.,Workshop 1A: Auto Contact Detection,

、10, 2015 ANSYS, Inc.,April 16, 2015,Note the numerous regions, color coded as orange (Bonded in a Closed status, but with penetration or gap same order of magnitude as pinball). These may or may not be acceptable, but they need to be reviewed carefully. Note Contact Regions 14 and 23, color coded as

、 red (Bonded with a Far Open status). Recall for a bonded contact to work, initial status must be closed or near open. A far open contact will be ignored. These contact pairs either need to be deleted or, if relevant, the Pinball needs to be increased to capture the initial gap or penetration correc

、tly.,Workshop 1A: Auto Contact Detection,11, 2015 ANSYS, Inc.,April 16, 2015,From the Contact Folder, highlight contact region 14. Turn on Body Views from the Utility Menu, to examine this region. Repeat for contact region 23. Clearly, the surfaces that comprise these regions would never be expected

、 to contact as they are separated by another part (Part 1). Hence, Contact Regions 14 and 23 should be deleted.,Workshop 1A: Auto Contact Detection,Contact Region 14,12, 2015 ANSYS, Inc.,April 16, 2015,Contact Region 23,Similarly, examine regions designated Orange because of the large amount of gap

、or penetration. Which regions are acceptable? Which regions are problematic? Ans: Acceptable: Regions 4,13,18 and 21 Problems: Region 15 (for similar reason as Contact Pair 14 accept this pair is worse because the bonded relationship across part 1 is being enforced).,13, 2015 ANSYS, Inc.,April 16, 2

、015,Workshop 1A: Auto Contact Detection,With the “Contacts” Folder highlighted, go to the Details of Contacts window. Notice the Tolerance slider is set to the lowest value (-100) resulting in Auto Contact Detection creating the most number of contact regions. Set the Tolerance Slider to zero (the n

、ormal default) Highlight all the contact regions in the current Contacts folder and RMB= Delete The Contacts folder should now be empty On the empty Contacts folder, RMB= Create Automatic Connections. There should now be 21 newly created Contact Regions.,Workshop 1A: Auto Contact Detection,14, 2015

、ANSYS, Inc.,April 16, 2015,Highlight the Contact Tool that was inserted previously With the newly created set of contact regions, this item is now under defined Click on the “Add” Button in the Contact Tool Worksheet to bring the newly created regions into this folder.,RMB “Generate Initial Contact Information” as before.,Workshop 1A: Auto Contact Detection,15, 2015 ANSYS, Inc.,April 16, 2015,Examine the calculated properties for the newl
