7、edwiththeadmirableperformanceofafamousviolinplayerwhomhehadheardthere.Theperformerhadproducedfromhisinstrumentarichnessoftonethatsometimessoundedliketinklingwaterdropsorrollingpearls；sometimeslikethebirdstwitteringinchorus，andthenrisingandswellinginsoundlikethewindthroughthefir-trees.Thepoetfeltasif
8、hisownheartwereweeping，butintonesofmelodylikethesoundofawomansvoice.Itseemednotonlythestrings，buteverypartoftheinstrumentfromwhichthesesoundswereproduced.Itwasawonderfulperformanceandadifficultpiece，andyetthebowseemedtoglideacrossthestringssoeasilythatitwasasifanyonecoulddoitwhotried.Eventheviolinan
9、dthebowappearedtoperformindependentlyoftheirmasterwhoguidedthem；itwasasifsoulandspirithadbeenbreathedintotheinstrument，sotheaudienceforgottheperformerinthebeautifulsoundsheproduced.Notsothepoet；herememberedhim，andnamedhim，andwrotedownhisthoughtsonthesubject. “Howfoolishitwouldbefortheviolinandthebow
10、toboastoftheirperformance，andyetwemenoftencommitthatfolly.Thepoet，theartist，themanofscienceinhislaboratory，thegeneral，wealldoit；andyetweareonlytheinstrumentswhichtheAlmightyuses；toHimalonethehonorisdue.Wehavenothingofourselvesofwhichweshouldbeproud.”Yes，thisiswhatthepoetwrotedown.Hewroteitintheformo
11、faparable，andcalledit“TheMasterandtheInstruments.”“Thatiswhatyouhavegot，madam，”saidthepentotheinkstand，whenthetwowerealoneagain. “DidyouhearhimreadaloudwhatIhadwrittendown？”“Yes，whatIgaveyoutowrite，”retortedtheinkstand. “Thatwasacutatyoubecauseofyourconceit.Tothinkthatyoucouldnotunderstandthatyouwer
12、ebeingquizzed.Igaveyouacutfromwithinme.SurelyImustknowmyownsatire.”“Ink-pitcher！”criedthepen.“Writing-stick！”retortedtheinkstand.Andeachofthemfeltsatisfiedthathehadgivenagoodanswer.Itispleasingtobeconvincedthatyouhavesettledamatterbyyourreply；itissomethingtomakeyousleepwell，andtheybothsleptwelluponi
