2、appenedtothem,forthisisatruestory.Throughthewholeweek,LittleClauswasobligedtoploughforGREatClaus,andlendhimhisonehorse;andonceaweek,onaSunday,GreatClauslenthimallhisfourhorses.ThenhowLittleClauswouldsmackhiswhipoverallfivehorses,theywereasgoodashisownonthatoneday.Thesunshonebrightly,andthechurchbell

3、swereringingmerrilyasthepeoplepassedby,dressedintheirbestclothes,withtheirprayer-booksundertheirarms.Theyweregoingtoheartheclergymanpreach.TheylookedatLittleClausploughingwithhisfivehorses,andhewassoproudthathesmackedhiswhip,andsaid, “Gee-up,myfivehorses.”“Youmustnotsaythat,”saidBigClaus; “foronlyon

4、eofthembelongstoyou.”ButLittleClaussoonforgotwhatheoughttosay,andwhenanyonepassedhewouldcallout, “Gee-up,myfivehorses!”“NowImustbegyounottosaythatagain,”saidBigClaus; “forifyoudo,Ishallhityourhorseonthehead,sothathewilldropdeadonthespot,andtherewillbeanendofhim.”“IpromiseyouIwillnotsayitanymore,”sai

5、dtheother;butassoonaspeoplecameby,noddingtohim,andwishinghim“Goodday,”hebecamesopleased,andthoughthowgranditlookedtohavefivehorsesploughinginhisfield,thathecriedoutagain, “Gee-up,allmyhorses!”“Illgee-upyourhorsesforyou,”saidBigClaus;andseizingahammer,hestrucktheonehorseofLittleClausonthehead,andhefe

6、lldeadinstantly.“Oh,nowIhavenohorseatall,”saidLittleClaus,weeping.Butafterawhilehetookoffthedeadhorsesskin,andhungthehidetodryinthewind.Thenheputthedryskinintoabag,and,placingitoverhisshoulder,wentoutintothenexttowntosellthehorsesskin.Hehadaverylongwaytogo,andhadtopassthroughadark,gloomyforest.Prese

7、ntlyastormarose,andhelosthisway,andbeforehediscoveredtherightpath,eveningcameon,anditwasstillalongwaytothetown,andtoofartoreturnhomebeforenight.Neartheroadstoodalargefarmhouse.Theshuttersoutsidethewindowswereclosed,butlightsshonethroughthecrevicesatthetop. “Imightgetpermissiontostayhereforthenight,”

8、thoughtLittleClaus;sohewentuptothedoorandknocked.Thefarmerswifeopenedthedoor;butwhensheheardwhathewanted,shetoldhimtogoaway,asherhusbandwouldnotallowhertoadmitstrangers. “ThenIshallbeobligedtolieouthere,”saidLittleClaustohimself,asthefarmerswifeshutthedoorinhisface.Neartothefarmhousestoodalargehayst

9、ack,andbetweenitandthehousewasasmallshed,withathatchedroof. “Icanlieupthere,”saidLittleClaus,ashesawtheroof; “itwillmakeafamousbed,butIhopethestorkwillnotflydownandbitemylegs;”foronitstoodalivingstork,whosenestwasintheroof.SoLittleClausclimbedtotheroofoftheshed,andwhileheturnedhimselftogetcomfortabl

10、e,hediscoveredthatthewoodenshutters,whichwereclosed,didnotreachtothetopsofthewindowsofthefarmhouse,sothathecouldseeintoaroom,inwhichalargetablewaslaidoutwithwine,roastmeat,andasplendidfish.Thefarmerswifeandthesextonweresittingatthetabletogether;andshefilledhisglass,andhelpedhimplenteouslytofish,whic

11、happearedtobehisfavoritedish. “IfIcouldonlygetsome,too,”thoughtLittleClaus;andthen,ashestretchedhisnecktowardsthewindowhespiedalarge,beautifulpie,indeedtheyhadagloriousfeastbeforethem.Atthismomentheheardsomeoneridingdowntheroad,towardsthefarmhouse.Itwasthefarmerreturninghome.Hewasagoodman,butstillhe

12、hadaverystrangeprejudice,hecouldnotbearthesightofasexton.Ifoneappearedbeforehim,hewouldputhimselfinaterriblerage.Inconsequenceofthisdislike,thesextonhadgonetovisitthefarmerswifeduringherhusbandsabsencefromhome,andthegoodwomanhadplacedbeforehimthebestshehadinthehousetoeat.Whensheheardthefarmercomings

13、hewasfrightened,andbeggedthesextontohidehimselfinalargeemptychestthatstoodintheroom.Hedidso,forheknewherhusbandcouldnotendurethesightofasexton.Thewomanthenquicklyputawaythewine,andhidalltherestofthenicethingsintheoven;forifherhusbandhadseenthemhewouldhaveaskedwhattheywerebroughtoutfor.“Oh,dear,”sighedLittleClausfromthetopoftheshed,ashesawallthegoodthingsdisappear.“Isanyoneupthere?”askedthefarmer,lookingupanddiscoveringLittleClaus. “Whyareyoulyingupthe
