2、;tillatlengthwintersetin,andthesunentirelydisappeared;formanyweekstherewouldbeconstantnight.Allaround,asfarastheeyecouldreach,nothingcouldbeseenbutfieldsofice,inwhichtheshipremainedstuckfast.ThesnowlaypiledupinGREatheaps,andofthesethesailorsmadehuts,intheformofbee-hives,someofthemaslargeandspaciousa
3、soneofthe“Hunsgraves,”andothersonlycontainingroomenoughtoholdthreeorfourmen.Itwasnotquitedark;thenorthernlightsshotforthredandblueflames,likecontinuousfireworks,andthesnowglittered,andreflectedbackthelight,sothatthenightherewasonelongtwilight.Whenthemoonwasbrightest,thenativescameincrowdstoseethesai
4、lors.Theyhadaverysingularappearanceintheirrough,hairydressesoffur,andridinginsledgesovertheice.Theybroughtwiththemfursandskinsingreatabundance,sothatthesnow-housesweresoonprovidedwithwarmcarpets,andthefursalsoservedforthesailorstowrapthemselvesin,whentheysleptundertheroofsofsnow,whileoutsideitwasfre
5、ezingwithacoldfarmoreseverethaninthewinterwithus.Inourcountryitwasstillautumn,thoughlateintheseason;andtheythoughtofthatintheirdistantexile,andoftenpicturedtothemselvestheyellowleavesonthetreesathome.Theirwatchespointedtothehoursofevening,andtimetogotosleep,althoughintheseregionsitwasnowalwaysnight.
6、Inoneofthehuts,twoofthemenlaidthemselvesdowntorest.Theyoungerofthesemenhadbroughtwithhimfromhomehisbest,hisdearesttreasureaBible,whichhisgrandmotherhadgivenhimonhisdeparture.Everynightthesacredvolumerestedunderhishead,andhehadknownfromhischildhoodwhatwaswritteninit.Everydayhereadinthebook,andwhilest
7、retchedonhiscoldcouch,theholywordshehadlearntwouldcomeintohismind: “IfItakethewingsofthemorning,andflytotheuttermostpartsofthesea,eventhereThouartwithme,andThyrighthandshallupholdme;”andundertheinfluenceofthatfaithwhichtheseholywordsinspired,sleepcameuponhim,anddreams,whicharethemanifestationsofGodt
8、othespirit.Thesoullivesandacts,whilethebodyisatrest.Hefeltthislifeinhim,anditwasasifheheardthesoundofdear,well-knownmelodies,asifthebreezesofsummerfloatedaroundhim;andoverhiscouchshonearayofbrightness,asifitwereshiningthroughthecoveringofhissnow-roof.Heliftedhishead,andsawthatthebrightgleamingwasnot
9、thereflectionoftheglitteringsnow,butthedazzlingbrightnessofthepinionsofamightyangel,intowhosebeamingfacehewasgazing.Asfromthecupofalily,theangelrosefromamidsttheleavesoftheBible;and,stretchingouthisarm,thewallsofthehutsunkdown,asthoughtheyhadbeenformedofalight,airyveilofmist,andtheGREenhillsandmeado
10、wsofhome,withitsruddywoods,layspreadaroundhiminthequietsunshineofalovelyautumnday.Thenestofthestorkwasempty,butripefruitstillhungonthewildapple-tree,althoughtheleaveshadfallen.Theredhipsgleamedonthehedges,andthestarlingwhichhunginthegreencageoutsidethewindowofthepeasantshut,whichwashishome,whistledt
11、hetunewhichhehadtaughthim.Hisgrandmotherhunggreenbirds-foodaroundthecage,ashe,hergrandson,hadbeenaccustomedtodo.Thedaughterofthevillageblacksmith,whowasyoungandfair,stoodatthewell,drawingwater.Shenoddedtothegrandmother,andtheoldwomannoddedtoher,andpointedtoaletterwhichhadcomefromalongwayoff.Thatvery
12、morningtheletterhadarrivedfromthecoldregionsofthenorth;there,wheretheabsentonewassweetlysleepingundertheprotectinghandofGod.Theylaughedandweptovertheletter;andhe,faraway,amidiceandsnow,undertheshadowoftheangelswings,weptandsmiledwiththeminspirit;forhesawandhearditallinhisdream.Fromthelettertheyreada
