5、heangelonlynodded,hedidnotflyupwardtoheaven.Itwasnight,andquitestillintheGREattown.Heretheyremained,andtheangelhoveredoverasmall,narrowstreet,inwhichlayalargeheapofstraw,ashes,andsweepingsfromthehousesofpeoplewhohadremoved.Therelayfragmentsofplates,piecesofplaster,rags,oldhats,andotherrubbishnotplea
6、santtosee.Amidstallthisconfusion,theangelpointedtothepiecesofabrokenflower-pot,andtoalumpofearthwhichhadfallenoutofit.Theearthhadbeenkeptfromfallingtopiecesbytherootsofawitheredfield-flower,whichhadbeenthrownamongsttherubbish.“Wewilltakethiswithus,”saidtheangel, “Iwilltellyouwhyasweflyalong.”Andasth
7、eyflewtheangelrelatedthehistory.“Downinthatnarrowlane,inalowcellar,livedapoorsickboy;hehadbeenafflictedfromhischildhood,andeveninhisbestdayshecouldjustmanagetowalkupanddowntheroomoncrutchesonceortwice,butnomore.Duringsomedaysinsummer,thesunbeamswouldlieonthefloorofthecellarforabouthalfanhour.Inthiss

9、wasinthebeech-woodwhilethesunshone,andthebirdscarolledgayly.Onespringdaytheneighborsboybroughthimsomefield-flowers,andamongthemwasonetowhichtherootstilladhered.Thishecarefullyplantedinaflower-pot,andplacedinawindow-seatnearhisbed.Andtheflowerhadbeenplantedbyafortunatehand,foritgrew,putforthfreshshoo
10、ts,andblossomedeveryyear.Itbecameasplendidflower-gardentothesickboy,andhislittletreasureuponearth.Hewateredit,andcherishedit,andtookcareitshouldhavethebenefitofeverysunbeamthatfounditswayintothecellar,fromtheearliestmorningraytotheeveningsunset.Theflowerentwineditselfeveninhisdreamsforhimitbloomed,f
11、orhimspreaditsperfume.Anditgladdenedhiseyes,andtotheflowerheturned,evenindeath,whentheLordcalledhim.HehasbeenoneyearwithGod.Duringthattimetheflowerhasstoodinthewindow,witheredandforgotten,tillatlengthcastoutamongthesweepingsintothestreet,onthedayofthelodgersremoval.Andthispoorflower,witheredandfaded
12、asitis,wehaveaddedtoournosegay,becauseitgavemorerealjoythanthemostbeautifulflowerinthegardenofaqueen.”“Buthowdoyouknowallthis?”askedthechildwhomtheangelwascarryingtoheaven.“Iknowit,”saidtheangel, “becauseImyselfwasthepoorsickboywhowalkeduponcrutches,andIknowmyownflowerwell.”thenthechildopenedhiseyes
13、andlookedintotheglorioushappyfaceoftheangel,andatthesamemomenttheyfoundthemselvesinthatheavenlyhomewhereallishappinessandjoy.AndGodpressedthedeadchildtoHisheart,andwingsweregivenhimsothathecouldflywiththeangel,handinhand.ThentheAlmightypressedalltheflowerstoHisheart;butHekissedthewitheredfield-flower,anditreceivedavoice.Thenitjoinedinthesongoftheangels,whosurroundedthethrone,somenear,andothersinadistantcircle,butallequallyhappy.Theyalljoinedinthechorusofpraise,bothGRE
