2、ches,broughtfrombeyondthemountains.Thehousewassituatedinanarrowgorge,whoserockywallsrosetoaperpendicularheight,nakedandblack,whileroundtheirsummitscloudsoftenhung,lookinglikewhitelivingfigures.Notasingingbirdwaseverheardthere,neitherdidmendancetothesoundofthepipe.Thespotwasonesacredtooldentimes;even

3、itsnamerecalledamemoryofthedayswhenitwascalled“Delphi.”Thenthesummitsofthedark,sacredmountainswerecoveredwithsnow,andthehighest,mountParnassus,glowedlongestintheredeveninglight.Thebrookwhichrolledfromitnearourhouse,wasalsosacred.HowwellIcanremembereveryspotinthatdeep,sacredsolitude!Afirehadbeenkindl

12、tears.OnedaytherecametoourhutFranks,menfromafarcountry,whosedresswasdifferenttoours.Theyhadtentsandbedswiththem,carriedbyhorses;andtheywereaccompaniedbymorethantwentyTurks,allarmedwithswordsandmuskets.TheseFrankswerefriendsofthePacha,andhadlettersfromhim,commandinganescortforthem.Theyonlycametoseeou

13、rmountain,toascendParnassusamidthesnowandclouds,andtolookatthestrangeblackrockswhichraisedtheirsteepsidesnearourhut.Theycouldnotfindroominthehut,norendurethesmokethatrolledalongtheceilingtillitfounditswayoutatthelowdoor;sotheypitchedtheirtentsonasmallspaceoutsideourdwelling.Roastedlambsandbirdswerebroughtforth,andstrong,sweetwine,ofwhichtheTurksareforbiddentopartake.Whentheydeparted,Iaccompaniedthemforsomedistance,carryingmylittlesisterAnastasia,wrappedinagoat-skin,onmyback.OneoftheFranki
