1、Comparative Commentary on Poem “Search my Tongue” and Text “ Being Bilingual”. The two texts, the poem “ Search for My Tongue” written by Sujata Bhatt and the text “Being Bilingual” both discuss the issue of bilingualism and how it affects the social atmosphere and self experience. However, they sho

2、w a different point of view to the issue. As such, even though both text are related to the same topic, their use of genre, form and formality is contrastingly different. Text 1(Search for My Tongue”) utilizes a poetry genre, free verse, informal melancholic tone and emotive language to convey the m

3、essage of ambivalent feelings on bilingualism. On the other hand, Text 2 “Being Bilingual” uses an essay form, prose genre, formal tone to express to the reader that the text is explanatory and informative. The authors perspective for Text 1 is vividly transmitted by the use of the languages. It is

4、written as a personal view in first person and present tense to tell the readers the problem she is suffering from. From Text 1, the description of “mother tongue would rot” profoundly expressed his perplex emotion on facing the dilemma of losing his mother language yet it is impossible to forget it

5、. This is told by his poem that his mother tongue subconsciously pops out in his dream, which is a factor that no one can control. In contrast, the authors perspective for Text 2 is explicitly conveyed at the beginning of the text to reveal his view. It is written mostly in third person and occasion

6、ally in first person to enhance the informative purpose to the audience. The use of present tense also successfully rises of the problem of Bilingualism in the process in our environment. In the passage the author intended to notify the reader that people being bilingual should be categorized into s

7、everal groups on the basis of their proficiency of both languages. This is explicitly told in the text. Also, the writer used examples from his life in order to make his message more reliable.The language of Text 1 is full of very emotive language in conjunction with vivid imagery. He uses extended

8、metaphors throughout the whole text to continually express his ubiquitous effect on mother language. Phrases such as “ grows backa stump of a shoot”, “ blossoms out of my mouth” are vivid extended metaphors used in the text to compare mother language to a growing shoot. The plant imagery symbolizes

9、life and energy, which is what the writer trying to express that although his mother language is not useful in his life, the mother tongue stand for his life after all. These descriptions all aptly contribute to his message that it is impossible to abandon his mother tongue. Furthermore, the use of

10、dramatic diction such as “ rot”, “spit it out,” indicates the emotional feeling of the author of being bilingual and the suffering related to mother language. Moreover, the author uses his mother tongue and English in the text. The use of mother language after the word “ dream” is to describe his mo

11、ther tongue as one that is such an erratic factor that he could not forget or deny.The language of Text 2 is appropriate, in the sense that it serves an informative purpose of the text. The dictions used in the text are concrete and formal to indicate the factual nature of the text. Strong dictions

12、such as “legitimately”, “theoretical” makes the text sound more serious affirmative to convey his view explicitly. These help to emphasize the theme and purpose of the text. Moreover, there are some use of emotive language such as “ far too strong”, “extremely” have express a scarce opinion of the a

13、uthor. Also, even though the writer uses some linguistic jargon, the languages used in the text is not very formal, this indicate the text will most likely aim at an average reader. The author also utilizes rhetorical question “What does it mean to be bilingual?” at the beginning of the text to conf

14、ront readers with the situation of the problem. Text 1 is separated into chronicle order by three verses. The first verse is the time when the author is facing his own dilemma on forgetting his mother tongue. The second verse is the dream that mother tongue appears in his head subconsciously. The th

15、ird verse is a section of him realizing his mother language revived. The structure of this poem is an obvious free verse where there are no rules for this type of poem. This is normally used to express the author capricious feelings governed by his whims on the moment. The writer also uses enjambmen

16、t, which breaks the lines with no regular end stopping. This is used to make the poem feel like a flow of though with a sensation of urgency or disorder.Text 2 is divided into a typical prose format with 4 paragraphs in the following layout: Introduction, body paragraph, and conclusion.
