1、第一篇:英语读书笔记 reading note 2014级化学学院绿色化学 杨斌 s101570 title: eugenie grandet writer: honore de balzac i have spent about two months in reading eugenie grandet. in my opinion, it is really a good novel for us which is worthy to be read. after reading, i know that money can buy something but not everything

2、. for better understanding of the novel, i will divide this reading note into three parts. firstly, in order to make you understand this novel quickly, i will introduce you the major characters. there are three persons we need deep analysis. they are grandet, his daughter eugenie and charles. the no

3、vel thesis puts their emphasis on grandet. grandet was one of the central roles in the novel. he was terribly greedy. he was the representative of greed and money. in his mind, money was everything, and he could not live in the world without money. he had a strong desire to possess money, though he

4、had an abundant of money. he always left himself in a back room, and appreciated money for a long time. when he was dying, he asked his daughter to put money on the table, and money could make him feel warm. in order to collect money, he lost human nature. he considered no love was in the world, and

5、 money is even much more valuable than his life. for example, grandet had a servant, who had worked for 30 years. but he never received any gift from grandet, except one old watch. though grandet was a christian, but actually he was not a real one. in his opinion, the existence of god was for his ne

6、ed. for him, money was real god and all the hope. compared with grandet, his daughter eugenie was very kind and humane. she considered money as a method for helping others. she devoted her whole life to serving the people. and she had done a lot of public works. for example, she had built one restro

7、om, eight primary schools and one library. she used money to help those who need it. then, we should put our attention on charles. he was born in a rich family and spoiled. the turning point in his life was to do business abroad. the change of life condition made his moral standard and value concept

8、 change. he became a very self-fish man. he wanted to become rich. in order to possess money, he gave up his true love, and pursued a noblemans daughter. to some extent, his outlook on money was similar to grandets. both of them were materialists and the lovers of money. secondly, the writer writing

9、 this novel should be introduced to us for we could realize the background information and understand it better. honore de balzac (1799-1850) could perhaps be described as one of the founders of this school that he established with the human comedy (1829-1850) - a long series of seventeen novels, a

10、vast panorama of french life that ranged from country life to city from private life to politics, from military life to psychological studies. it is by no means easy to choose one or two novels from the human comedy. there is always a temptation to add one or two more for a better understanding why

11、balzacs works have lasted so long. perhaps eugenie grandet best illustrates his characteristic methods and the secret of his genius and talent. it is a simple story of a family house in provincial saumur in which lives a miser, grandet with his wife and daughter eugenie. both suffer continuously und

12、er the stifling shadow of his obsession with gold. but the arrival of her cousin, charles makes eugenies heart turn gently towards thoughts of love and marriage, if only to get away from the father. but grandet opposes the marriage because so much of his outrageous gold would be carried away as dowr

13、y. the proposed marriage breaks down. charles goes away to seek his fortunes in the east and eugenie is left alone to face the future on her own. quite obviously, a web of intrigue surrounds mother and daughter. a bunch of ambitious men and adventurers, careerists and speculators and misers of all k

14、inds congregate, all attracted by the pale, cold glitter of gold. part of balzacs continuing success lies in his portrayal of these modern types of unscrupulous rascals and the mania they have for social climbing and fortune hunting which he was the first to portray in modern literature. third, from

15、 the novel, i could see the shadow of the real life. especially since the opening up and economic reform, china has been participating in economic globalization to a deeper degree. with the economic growth, more and more people consider that if you have money, you can make the devil push the millsto
