Japan is located on the Ring of Fire, which spreads for 25,000 miles from New Zealand to Japans Pacific Coast,to Alaska,and then down the pacific coasts of North and South America. 90% of all earthquakes take place around the Ring of Fire.

6、 It is also home to 452 volcanoes. The Japanese government has a fiveyear plan to protect the country from deadly tsunamis. Their plan is to build 440 concrete walls, reinforced with steel. The walls will cover 140 miles of coastline and cost $8 billion. The government used computer simulations (模拟)

7、 to determine how large the next tsunami could be, in order to decide how tall and long the walls should be built. Building tsunamisafe walls is not a new idea for the Japanese. 50 years ago, Japan built the first tsunami protection wall. In 2011, a 49foot high wall saved 3,000 local, people in an e

8、astcoast town,Fudai.When the wall was being built, people thought it was a total waste of money. After the tsunami, those same people were glad for what it did. Many people dont like this plan because of past failures. The protection wall at Kamaishi was the largest in the world at the time, but fel

9、l to the powerful tsunami of 2011. Additionally, a wall planned for another city, Koizumi, will be 48 feet high when completed. However, the wave that destroyed the city in 2011 was higher than that.Some Japanese worry that the huge walls might ruin tourism in Japan, as well as its ecosystems. They
