、强化训练05阅读理解(五)(45分钟,100分)ARecently, researchers have announced a breakthrough in the exploration of new energydevelopment of the first practical artificial leaf, an advanced solar cell that imitates the process, called photosynthesis(光合作用), that green plants use to make sunlight and water into energy

、. “A practical artificial leaf has been a dream of scientists for decades,” said Daniel Nocera, who led the research team. “We believe we have made it. The artificial leaf shows particular promise as an inexpensive source of electricity for homes of the poor in developing countries. One can imagine

、villages in India and Africa soon purchasing an affordable basic power system based on this technology. ”The leaf is like the shape of a poker card but thinner. Placed in water in a bright sunlight, it could produce enough electricity to supply a house in a developing country with electricity for a

、day by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen, which are stored in a fuel cell to produce electricity. The “artificial leaf” is not a new concept. The first artificial leaf was developed more than a decade ago by John Turner. However, it was impractical for wider use, as it was composed of rare, ex

、pensive metals and was highly unstable with a lifespan of barely one day.Noceras new leaf overcomes these problems. It is made of inexpensive materials that are widely available, works under simple conditions and is highly stable. Laboratory studies showed that it could operate continuously for at l

、east 45 hours without a drop in activity. The key to this breakthrough is Noceras recent discovery of several new powerful, inexpensive catalysts, which are able to accelerate the chemical reaction under simple conditions. Right now, Noceras leaf is about 10 times more efficient at carrying out photo

、synthesis than a natural leaf. Yet he is optimistic that he can boost the efficiency of the device much higher in the future.1. Daniel Nocera describes his artificial leaf as promising in _.A. making an artificial plant that can feed itselfB. finding a new kind of catalyst to produce electricityC. p

、roviding electricity for the poor family at a low costD. changing the sunlight and water into electricity directly2. The underlined word “accelerate” in the last paragraph probably means _.A. reduce the loss of energyB. speed up the processC. work as a media to store collected energyD. control the o

、peration of chemical reactions3. We can learn from the passage _.A. There was nobody who had an idea of the artificial leaf before.B. Noceras artificial leaf has advantages over Turners in some ways.C. The first artificial leaf was once widely put into use in many countries.D. The new artificial lea

、f works well but can just keep operating only one day.4. The passage is most probably from _.A. a science news reportB. a science fiction storyC. a fairy tale bookD. an advertisement for solar products【语篇解读】本文报道一则有关新型太阳能电池的新闻“人造树叶”。

ABThe Brown BearMy wife Laura and I were on the beach, with three of our children, taking pict

、ures of shore birds near our home in Alaska when we spotted a bear. The bear was thin and small, moving aimlessly.Just a few minutes later, I heard my daughter shouting, “Dad! The bear is right behind us!” An aggressive bear will usually rush forward to frighten away its enemy but would suddenly sto

、p at the last minute. This one was silent and its ears pinned backthe sign (迹象) of an animal that is going in for the kill. And it was a cold April day. The bear behaved abnormally, probably because of hunger.I held my camera tripod (三脚架) in both hands to form a barrier as the bear rushed into me. I

、ts huge head was level with my chest and shoulders, and the tripod stuck across its mouth. It bit down and I found myself supporting its weight. I knew I would not be able to hold it for long.Even so, this was a fight I had to win: I was all that stood between the bear and my family, who would stand

、 little chance of running faster than a brown bear. The bear hit at the camera, cutting it off the tripod. I raised my left arm to protect my face; the beast held tightly on the tripod and pressed it into my side. My arm could not move, and I sensed that my bones were going to break.Drawing back my f

、ree hand, I struck the bear as hard as I could for five to six times. The bear opened its mouth and I grasped its fur, trying to push it away. I was actually wrestling (扭打) with the bear at this point. Then, as suddenly as it had begun, the fight ended. The bear moved back toward the forest, before returning for another attackthe first time I felt p
