Shanghai Jiao Tong University M.A. Thesis 6 Abstract As the last two decades have witnessed increased international exchanges in Chinese universities, an English i
9、ntroduction to the university on their homepage plays a significant role in promoting international exchanges academically and culturally. However, to date there has been little research done in analyzing the genre of the English introduction to the university on the homepage, and still less in cont
10、rastive studies of the English introductions across different cultures. This thesis aims to conduct a corpus-based comparative study of the English introductions to the universities in China and in English speaking countries, specifically in China and America and Britain. Two corpora of English intr
11、oductions were built, one consisting of 30 introductions to the Chinese universities, the other comprising 20 American university introductions and 10 British ones. The generic moves and lexical features of these introductions were identified and a comparative study was made between them in the two
12、corpora. In this thesis, Swales move analysis model is adopted to analyze the rhetorical moves of the genre of the university introduction. The move structures in the introduction of the two corpora were examined respectively and the comparison was carried out in terms of the frequency, number, sequ
13、ence, length and content of the moves. The research result indicates that the move categories of the introductions to the Chinese universities are on the whole similar to the western ones. But for the rest parameters of the moves, significant variations are found between the two corpora. Moreover, t
14、he study demonstrates the disparity of the collocation of the word “university”, and the inappropriate usage of “famous” in Chinese university introductions. One important reason for these differences is language transfer which leads Chinese introduction writing to be different from the native speak
15、ers writing. The results of this study can serve as a practical guidance to the Chinese universities in the writing of the English introductions. And they provide help for the establishment of the university introduction page on the Internet to be more consistent with the conventions.
