He has been driven by his desire to understand how traditional Chinese medicine works. Heis now the dire

11、ctor of a research group at Guizhous Key Laboratory of Chemistry for Natural Products. The Sunnybrook Research Institute in Canada, where he worked earlier, has successfully discovered oncogenes andtumor suppressor genes(致癌基因和肿瘤抑 制 基 因) that have mutated (突 变) in various forms of cancer. In recent y

12、ears, Ben David turned his attention to studying the development of compounds(化合物) and drugs that canbeused to fight cancer. “I am a biologist and some of them are chemists. They separate compounds from TCM and there has to be somebody to understand their functions. That is my expert knowledge.” The

13、 province has suitable soil and air for the growth of herbs for TCM. The area is home to many racial groups, such as the Miaopeoplewho haveusedTCM for long. “Here I have access to everything new and locally sourced,”he says, adding that Chinese scientist Tu Youyou, who won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Me

14、dicine, is an inspirationfor him. In 2014, the Guizhou laboratorys program was included in the One Thousand Foreign Experts project, which was put forward bythe central government in 2011 to inviteforeign specialists tothecountryover a decadeor so. The laboratory has been given more than 10 million

15、yuanto promote the drug research by the government. Despite such support, Ben David has had to deal with challenges, including building the laboratory and language barriers at the beginning. And its difficult to find enough local talent, because people usually prefer workingin bigger cities like Bei

16、jingand Shanghai.” He has lost more than 10trained technicians in the past two years. Now, Ben Davids team has 15 chemists. The laboratory has discovered some TCM components that might be usedfor the treatment of some kinds of cancer, and a few relevant drugs are in pre- clinical(临 床 前) development,hesays. Ben David has also taken advantage of his wide network of communication to help Guizhou improve its international exchanges, including bringing top scientists for meetings.
