6、frustrations in working on the thesis. ii Abstract Language is a highly structured system of symbols. Sentences are not formed by randomly combining lexical items, but by following a set of rules. The linear sequence is one of the basic rules. In linearly-structured sentences, syntactic elements are

For this reason, the exploration of the ordering of predicate modifiers arouses much interest in scholars a

They have the following characteristics: firstly, differences between English predicate and Chinese Wei-Yu are not fully consid

Therefore, this thesis aims to make a description-oriented contrastive study of English and Chinese predicate modifiers with data from 200 bi-directional translation corresponding texts. Thirdly, based on the present data, the ordering of co-occurring predicate modifiers can be described as: Degree

The thesis is composed of six chapters. Chapter One is an introductory p

Chapter Two is an overview of related studies on predicate modifiers in English and Chinese as well as contrastive studies of predicate modifiers between the two languages. Chapter Three attempts to establish the common ground for the present contrastive study. It introduces the perspectives adopted by the study, which include the definition, the classification and the position of pre
