3、 familiar to people over 2000 years. Traditionally, metaphor is viewed as a kind of method to decorate and beautify language. With the development of cognitive metaphor, it is asserted that metaphor is cognitive in nature; metaphor is pervasive not only in peoples everyday language, but also in peop
4、les thought and action. Thus, human beings ordinary conceptual system is fundamentally metaphorical in nature. Therefore, metaphor is not merely a figure of speech, but also an important cognitive tool and method to understand the world and construct the concept system. Especially, Conceptual Metaph
5、or Theory is used a lot in peoples daily life. As the core of modern cognitive metaphor, and an important concept in cognitive linguistics, conceptual metaphor allows us to understand a relatively complicated, abstract and invisible concept in terms of a more familiar, concrete and visible concept.
6、Moreover, the mapping model is widely used in human thinking and behaving. In the past decades, a lot of researches of metaphor have been done, including the researches of conceptual metaphor by some cognitive linguists. But there has no systematic and overall research on the human body idioms from
7、the conceptual metaphors perspective. Idioms research has a long history, and both English and Chinese scholars have made lots of achievements in this field. As an inseparable part in language, researches on idioms are always pervasive. However, there are few studies which study the idioms from the
8、perspective of Conceptual Metaphor Theory. Therefore, this study tries to make a contrastive analysis of human body idioms in English and Chinese from the perspective of conceptual metaphor, aiming at providing a crosscultural interpretation on conceptual metaphor. There are five parts in the thesis
9、. Chapter 1 is an introduction to the research objectives, purpose, significance and the framework of the thesis. Chapter 2 is the literature review on metaphor researches. The theoretical basis, conceptual metaphor, are also included in this part. Chapter3 and Chapter 4 are the main body of this th
10、esis. In Chapter3, human body idioms are analyzed in detail, including idioms concerning eyes, hand, heart, and etc. the In Chapter 4, Abstract II the author presents a contrastive study of conceptual metaphors in human body idioms in English and Chinese. The author finds that there are both similar
11、ities and differences in conceptual metaphor of human body idioms in English and Chinese. Reasons accounting for the similarities and differences are analyzed too in this part from crosscultural aspect. Chapter 5 is the conclusion. Based on the previous study, the author draws the following conclusi
12、on: (1) conceptual metaphor is popular in human body idioms in English and Chinese; (2) there are similarities as well as differences in human body idioms in English and Chinese; (3) similarities of the conceptual metaphors root in the similarities of human beings cognition model and life experience
13、; differences result from divergence of different cultures. And the thesis significance,limitations as well as the suggestions in further study are also presented in conclusion. This thesis analyzes the similarities and differences of human body idioms in English and Chinese from the cognitive aspec
14、t, which has its special theoretical and practical significance. Theoretically, the research validates the universality of conceptual metaphor, and provides the interpretation of idioms from a totally new perspective. Aractically, with the development of globalization, cross-cultural communication h
15、as gradually become the mainstream of foreign language teaching and learning. Therefore, the contrastive research of human body idioms will help English learners in China to facilitate their learning and brings benefit for crosscultural translation and communication. 16、gnition mapping human body 摘 要 III 摘 要 两千多年前，隐喻作为修辞格就为世人所知。传统隐喻观认为，隐喻是一种使语言 变得优美的手段。近年来随着认知隐喻的发展，从根本上确定了隐喻的本质是认知的， 隐喻不仅存在于我们的语言中，同时也广泛存在于我们的思维与行动中。人类思维中的 概念系统与认知系统从本质上讲也是隐喻性的，因此隐喻不仅是一种修辞格，更是我们 理解世界和构建概念系统的重要认知工具和手段。 概念隐喻是现代认知隐喻学研究的核 心，也是认知语言学的重要内容，它使人们能用相对熟悉的、具体有形的概念去研究复 杂的、抽象无形的概念。同时它的映射原理也被广泛应用于人们的思维与行动。最近几 十年间兴起了大量的隐喻研究，包括认知语言学家对概念隐喻的研究，但是从概念隐喻 视角下对英汉习语的研究还不太系统全面。 习语研究由来已久，中外学者在英语习语
