1、A Trip for Mrs.Taylor Hugh Garner Author: Hugh Garner (1913 1979) was a Canadian novelist . 1.Born in England , then came to Canada in 1919 with his parents, and was raised in Toronto. 2.During the Great Depression, he rode the rails in both Canada and the United States, and then joined the Internat

2、ional Brigades in the Spanish Civil War During WWII he served in the Canadian navy. 3. Following the war, Garner concentrated on his writing. He published his first novel, Storm Below, in 1949. 4.He received Governor Generals Award in 1963 5. Garner struggled much of his life with alcoholism, and di

3、ed in 1979 of alcohol-related illness. 6. He created 17 books, 100 stories, 400 magazine articles and essays, 10 television dramas, numerous radio dramas and a stage play in his whole life. She took this trip very seriously because she still had an enthusiasm toward life. Denotation and Connotation Many words in this article have connotations

10、. e.g. The dress didnt fit her, but she liked its rich color and the feeling of opulence(富 裕)it gave. In our opinion, Mrs. Taylor didnt have much money to buy dresses, but she also desired wealth and wanted to be respected by others. Mrs. Eisen had given her this dress the year before, so she took i

11、t as a precious. Main idea Mrs.Taylor, an elder woman,who lived far away from her only alive son, felt very lonely. So she took a trip to escape loneliness. After a long and good preparation, she set out. During the trip, she encountered with many people,inculding a young man ,who helped her carry t

12、he suitcase and cross the road. Then at the station , she made friends with a young mother, and became a “babysitter“of a baby boy. Because of lacking money , she had to get off the train at the next stop. Although It was such a short trip ,she still felt very happy and excited . From the story, we

13、can learn that this little, old woman was poor and lonely. she lived in a dreary tiny room and received meager old-age pension to support the life. Nobody needed her, including her son. Meanwhile , we can also see her independence and optimistic. She had been lived alone for many years ,even a short

14、 trip could satisfy her . Whats more , she was thirsty for familial affection and enjoyed being a babysitter. She loved her son but was ignored by him. Compared with her son, even the strangers cared more about her, which tells us that we should be concerned with the old , and should not let them feel lonely and abandoned. Our ideas Thank you!
