、目 录第6讲2第7讲45第8讲86第9讲122第10讲162第6讲Prof: Good morning. As you can see from the title of todays lecture,Habitats at Herculaneum and Early Roman Interior Decoration,00:00:11,021 - 00:00:14,208were going to be concentrating once again,00:00:14,209 - 00:00:19,610at least in the first half of the lecture, o

、n domestic architecture in Campania.00:00:19,610 - 00:00:23,520Were going to look at several houses in Herculaneum, and then were going to move from there to begin ourdiscussion of early Roman interior decoration, namely the First and Second Styles of Roman wall painting. And what youll see makes them

、particularly relevant to what weve been discussing thus far this term is the fact that in both the First and Second Styles,00:00:43,240 - 00:00:45,800architecture is depicted in these paintings, and were going to see some very interesting relationships between that00:00:50,244 - 00:00:54,920and the b

、uilt monuments that weve talkedabout thus far this semester.Just to remind you of the location of Herculaneum, which is usually called the sister city of Pompeii, because of that locale. We see it on the map here.Pompeii is down in this location.Herculaneum is to the northeast of Pompeii, closer to Napl

、esthan Pompeii is, as you can see.And note also the city of Boscoreale,Boscoreale, which is located between, almost equidistant - a little bit closer to Pompeii thanHerculaneum - but in between the two.And I point it out to you now because were going to look atan important room, with paintings, from th

、e city of Boscoreale today as well. Here you see a view, a Google Earth flyover,of Herculaneum, as it looks today. Its very helpful because you can see a couple of things herethat I want you to keep in mind, as we look at this city. One,that although most of the city of Pompeii has been excavated,00:01

、:58,468 - 00:02:04,980only about a quarter or twenty-five percent of the cityof Herculaneum has been excavated.00:02:04,980 - 00:02:08,681So we have much less at Herculaneum than we do for Pompeii,00:02:08,682 - 00:02:13,430and what were missing, for the most part,is the public architecture. We dont

、have a great amphitheater from Herculaneum. We dont have a theater and a music hall complex. We think we might have part of the basilica, but were not absolutely sure.We dont have the great large forum space that we have in Pompeii.00:02:30,060 - 00:02:34,044So were missing a lot of that public archite

、cture at Herculaneum,00:02:34,045 - 00:02:37,900which gives us less of a sense of what the city was originally like,00:02:37,900 - 00:02:41,310at least in its public face, although theres no doubt thatthat material still lies beneath the ground. So we have only a quarter of the city, mostly the reside

、ntial part of the city, or part of the residential part of the city.00:02:49,750 - 00:02:53,970But there are several houses there that are extremely-give us,provide information, especially about what was goingon between the earthquake and the eruption of Vesuvius,62 to 79,that are extremely valuable

、 in terms of giving us a sense again of the evolution of Roman domestic architecture.00:03:12,960 - 00:03:17,150The other issue that this particular view raises is the reason00:03:17,151 - 00:03:20,870why Herculaneum is less well excavated than Pompeii, and the reason for that has to do-and you can s

、ee it wellhere- has to do with the fact thatthe modern city grew up on top of the ancient city. And they were able at one point to clear part of it,for excavation, but they have not been able to clear the rest.00:03:36,590 - 00:03:39,110Its a political nightmare to have to deal-you have to relocate a

、ll the people who live in this area andhave lived in this area for a very long time.Thats politically a very difficult thing to do.It also is extremely costly. So thus far only twenty-five percent of Herculaneum revealed.Lets all hope that at some point someday Italy can sort this out00:03:57,667 - 0

、0:04:02,210and find a way to excavate the rest of this extraordinary city.00:04:02,210 - 00:04:06,631You can see from this view that I took as-this is one of the views00:04:06,632 - 00:04:10,990that you get as you enter the site, the current location today.00:04:10,990 - 00:04:14,710But I think you c

、an see very well here again what Im talking about:00:04:14,711 - 00:04:17,170the relationship between the ancient city, lower ground level, that has been unearthed through excavation.00:04:20,610 - 00:04:24,830You can see a peristyle court of one of the houses here, for example. But you can see the way in which the modern city rings the site,00:04:29,782 - 00:04:37,350and again what a challenge it would be to remove that modern city a
