1、Unit Ten,Section A The Challenging Friend I Didnt Know,Text Structure Analysis,In this unit, we have another common writing technique comparison and contrast. When we are looking at the whole structure, it is clear that the comparisons and contrasts are being made through the line of time sequence,

2、i.e. from childhood to the time when both of them are over sixty.,Parts,Part I. Part II. Part III. Part IV. Part V.,Part I.,The first part is the first two paragraphs, which sets the background and gives clues for further development of the story. In the two paragraphs, the writer mainly tells us ab

3、out the similarities between John Bullyer and himself. They are of the same age, and they shared the same relative Aunt Carrie.,Part II.,The second part consists of five paragraphs, from Paragraph 3 to Paragraph 7. Comparisons and contrasts have been made through the different stages of their lives.

4、,Part III.,The third part is Paragraph 8, a transitional point of time: when both of them reached retiring age. And the two men, never meeting before, met each other in a club.,Part IV.,The fourth part is made up of four paragraphs, Paragraphs 9 to 12. They, for the first time, exchanged what they t

5、hought of each other before. Both of them thought of the other one as more handsome, more dynamic and cleverer. And each worked hard in his own career in an effort to appear more successful than the other.,Part V.,The fifth part is the last paragraph, Paragraph 13. After their first meeting after a

6、lifetime of comparisons with each other, it dawned on them their Aunt Carries well-intentioned comparisons between them were of great help. The stories Aunt Carrie told helped them become successful in their lives. So finally, with the tensions of competition gone, they both drank to the memory of t
