9、ves. Though much work about discourse analysis has been done before, little attention has been paid to the specific type of news discourse-economic review. With the economic development, economic review texts are more and more important to peoples life. In addition, the contrastive study of interper
10、sonal function between Chinese economic reviews and English economic reviews is rarely referred to. Therefore, the present study aims to do a contrastive study on Chinese and American economic review texts within the framework of Hallidays systemic functional grammar and Martins appraisal theory. In
11、terpersonal function refers to the function in which language is used by people to express their opinions and attitudes. In economic reviews, the communicative sides are the writer and the reader. The writer tries to employ linguistic resources to influence the reader, to make his business opinions
12、easily accepted, it is obvious that many interpersonal resources are embedded in this sub-style of news discourse. Thus, it is necessary to conduct present research. Based on the elaborated framework of Hallidays systemic functional grammar and Martins appraisal theory, the study will explore the re
13、alization of interpersonal function in Chinese economic review texts and English economic review texts from three perspectives of mood system, modality system and appraisal system. To ensure the validity and reliability of this thesis, the writer collected 40 economic review discourses which have be
14、en published from January to August 2010, among which 20 in Chinese and 20 in English. All of these discourses share the readership and circulation in large quantities and can reflect the popular language of English and Chinese in the modern society. Therefore, on the basis of interpersonal function theories, this thesis adopts the study methods of qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis, then analyzes the contrastive results from mood system, modality system and appraisal system.
