2、asindependencetotheworld,andourpurposestotheAlmighty,theyknewthatAmerica,toendure,wouldhavetochange.Notchangeforchangesake,butchangetopreserveAmericasideals:life,liberty,thepursuitofhaine. Thoughwemarchtothemusicofourtime,ourmiionistimele.EachgenerationofAmericansmustdefinewhatitmeatobeanAmerican.On
3、behalfofournation,Isalutemypredeceor,PresidentBush,forhishalf-centuryofservicetoAmerica,andIthankthemillioofmenandwomenwhosesteadfastneandsacrificetriumphedoverdepreion,fascismandmunism. Today,agenerationraisedintheshadowsoftheColdWaraumesnewreoibilitiesinaworldwarmedbythesuhineoffreedom,butthreaten
4、edstillbyancienthatredsandnewplagues.Raisedinunrivalledproerity,weinheritaneconomythatisstilltheworldsstrongest,butisweakenedbybusinefailures,stagnantwages,increasinginequality,anddeepdivisioamongourownpeople. WhenGeorgeWashingtonfirsttooktheoathIhavejustsworntouphold,newstravelledslowlyacrothelandb
5、yhorseback,andacrotheoceanbyboat.Nowthesightsandsoundsofthisceremonyarebroadcastitantaneouslytobillioaroundtheworld.Communicatioandmerceareglobal.Investmentismobile.Technologyisalmostmagical,andambitionforabetterlifeisnowuniversal. WeearnourlivelihoodinAmericatodayinpeacefulpetitionwithpeopleallacro
6、theEarth.Profoundandpowerfulforcesareshakingandremakingourworld,andtheurgentquestionofourtimeiswhetherwecanmakechangeourfriendandnotourenemy.ThisnewworldhasalreadyenrichedthelivesofmillioofAmericawhoareabletopeteandwininit.Butwhenmostpeopleareworkingharderforle,whenotherscaotworkatall,whenthecostofh
7、ealthcaredevastatesfamiliesandthreatetobankruptourenterprises,greatandsmall;whenthefearofcrimerolawabidingcitizeoftheirfreedom;andwhenmillioo Weknowwehavetofacehardtruthsandtakestrongste,butwehavenotdoneso.Iteadwehavedrifted,andthatdriftinghaserodedourresources,fracturedoureconomy,andshakenourconfid
8、ence.Thoughourchallengesarefearsome,soareourstrengths.Americahaveeverbeenarestle,questing,hopefulpeople,andwemustbringtoourtasktodaythevisionandwillofthosewhocamebeforeus.FromourRevolutiontotheCivilWar,totheGreatDepreion,totheCivilRightsmovement,ourpeoplehavealwaysmusteredthedeterminationtocotructfr
9、omthesecrisesthepillarsofourhistory.ThomasJeffersonbelievedthattopreservetheveryfoundatioofournationwewouldneeddramatihangefromtimetotime.Well,myfellowAmerica,thisisourtime.Letusembraceit. Ourdemocracymustbenotonlytheenvyoftheworldbuttheengineofourownrenewal.ThereisnothingwrongwithAmericathatcaotbec
10、uredbywhatisrightwithAmerica. Andsotodaywepledgeanendtotheeraofdeadlockanddrift,andanewseasonofAmericanrenewalhasbegun. TorenewAmericawemustbebold.Wemustdowhatnogenerationhashadtodobefore.Wemustinvestmoreinourownpeople,intheirjo,andintheirfuture,andatthesametimecutourmaivedebt.andwemustdosoinaworldi
11、nwhichwemustpeteforeveryoortunity.Itwillnotbeeasy.Itwillrequiresacrifice,butitcanbedone,anddonefairly.Notchoosingsacrificeforitsownsake,butforourownsake.Wemustprovideforournationthewayafamilyprovidesforitschildren. Ourfounderssawthemselvesinthelightofposterity.Wecandonole.Anyonewhohaseverwatchedachi

16、mericawemustmeetchallengesabroad,aswellasathome.Thereisnolongeracleardivisionbetweenwhatisforeignandwhatisdomestic.Theworldeconomy,theworldenvironment,theworldAIDScrisis,theworldarmsrace:theyaffectusall.Todayasanoldorderpaes,thenewworldismorefree,butlestable.Communismscollaehascalledfortholdanimosities,andnewdangers.Clearly,Americamustcontinuetoleadtheworldwedidsomuchtomake.
