IntroductionThesis proposal is a document presenting a general overview of your graduation thesis; it is generally done as a written report and presented to your tutor. Your tutor will read your proposal and give you his or her comments and objective judgment

Once you have been asked to submit a thesis proposal you should clearly realize that its aim is to convince your audience that:l your research is significant and important; l it presents your argument or reports your findings in the field of your topic; l your research corresponds to your knowledg

3、e and interest; l it can be completed within the time required. Thesis proposal has much importance for the author; it clarifies the papers aims, defines its perspectives, describes the methods to be used, foresees problems and ways of solving them, and predicts outcomes.2. Major ComponentsA good BA

4、 thesis proposal should cover/include the following components.1) Title (no more than 20 words)The title can be a working title in that it can be changed at a later date. It should convey the essence of your thesis. The trick is to be brief without being vague.2) Rationale (about three paragraphs)It

5、 should give your reader three messages in three paragraphs: 1) Your topic and its background; 2) Brief literature review; and 3) Your research question.In the third paragraph, state your specific objectives. Which particular aspect of a limited topic do you want to investigate? What is your approac

6、h? And what perspective do you adapt in your research?3) Significance and feasibilityIn this section, you need do two things. First you should explain how your research or thesis is significant in both theoretical aspect and the aspect of its application. How your thesis is different from previous r

7、esearch? This newness could be “new” in approach, in perspective, in data or in method. You should also demonstrate that 1) your topic is neither too broad nor difficult, and 2) you can handle your research within the time limit, and 3) there are abundant resources available on campus for your resea

8、rch.4) Methodology In this section, you describe the methods you are going to apply to the research question in your thesis. What is your main approach? RationaleThe learners dictionary dates from three major areas of research in the 1920s- 30s: the vocabulary control movement, phraseology and pedagogical grammar. Under the great influence of the findings in these areas

11、, the first learners dictionaries appeared. These were: The New Method English Dictionary, A Grammar of English Words. A Beginners English-Japanese Dictionary, and the Idiomatic and Syntactic English Dictionary. The next few decades have seen the rapid growth of various dictionaries such as The Adva

12、nced Learners Dictionary, Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary and Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English. With the development of computer technologies, dictionary now has taken various forms like print dictionary, pocket electronic dictionary, online dictionary and so on. Meanwhile, a great var

13、iety of researches on dictionaries have also been carried out. The focus of these researches, however, did not shift from the linguistic content and structure of dictionaries onto their users and uses until the late 1970s when a conference entitled Dictionaries and their users was organized at Exete

14、r by Reinhard Hartmann. Since then, in A.P. Cowies words, “investigations into the users and uses of learners dictionaries-bilingual as well as monolingual-have been conducted in several countries, at several proficiency levels, and against a variety of first-language backgrounds.”There are six majo

15、r types of user-related researches, as Cowie observed. First, theres research on categories of information (e.g. meaning, spelling, pronunciation, grammar) and their importance to dictionary users. According to Jerzy tomaszczyk, Henri Bejoint and Carla Marellos studies, dictionary users were often o

16、verwhelmingly preoccupied with meaning. Second, investigations have been carried out concerning dictionary users attitudes, expectations and criticisms towards learners dictionary. There seems to be a paradox: on the one hand, dictionary users think highly of their dictionaries, especially monolingual learners dictionaries, on the other, they usually ignore their structure, content, and possible functions.
