In fact, when he was 9 years old, his grades ranked among the worst in his class. With a little more effort, he brought those grades up to about average1, but

Although his grades were poor, both his teachers and his classes seemed to understand that they had a future talent among them, because they called Hawking “Einstein.” 2. _ Biographer Kristine Larsen writes about how Hawking faced isolation2and unhappiness during his first year or s

4、o at Oxford. After joining the rowing team, everything was changed. Hawking didn t have a large or athletic build. However, row teams needed smaller men like Hawking who didn t row, but rather controlled steering3and the stroke rate4. Because rowing was so important and competitive at Oxford, Hawkin

5、g s role on the team made him very popular. 3. _ He is also a children s book author. In 2007, Stephen and his daughter, Lucy Hawking, co- operated in writing “George s Secret Key to the Universe.” Of course, much of the book is meant to explain heavy scientific theories, such as black holes and the

6、 origin of life, to children. The book was written to be the first of a trilogy that would continue George s adventures. The next one in the series came out in 2009 and is called “George s Cosmic Treasure Hunt.” 4. _ In 2007, when Stephen Hawking was 65 years old, he got to take the ride of a lifeti

7、me. He was able to experience zero- gravity. Hawking, free from his wheelchair for the first time in four decades, was even able to perform gymnastic flips5. When asked about why he wanted to do this, he of course said his desire was to go into space. In fact, he hopes that people can travel to othe

Diners with their eyes covered assessed the sweetness, saltiness, and crunch, as w

12、ell as overall flavour of foods as they were played white noise. While louder noise reduced the sweetness or saltiness, it increased the measure of crunch. It may go some way to explain why airline food less appeals to passengers a phenomenon that drives airline companies to heavily make their foods

13、 more suitable for their passengers. “I m sure airlines do their best. We wonder if there are other reasons why the food would not be good. One thought is perhaps that the background noise has some effect,”Andy Woods, a researcher from Unilever s laboratories and the University of Manchester, told B

14、BC News. “Nasa gives their space explorers very strong- tasting foods, because for some reason they can t taste food that strongly again,perhapsit sthebackgroundnoise. However, there is no previous research on this, so we go on to see if the hunch (预感) is correct.” In noisier settings, foods were ra

15、ted less salty or sweet than they were in the absence of background noise, but were rated to be crunchier. “The evidence points to this effect being down to where your attention lies if the background noise is loud it might draw your attention to that, away from the food,” Dr Woods said. Also in the

16、 group s findings there is the suggestion that the overall satisfaction with the food was connected with the degree to which diners liked what they were hearing a finding the researchers are pursuing in further experiments.
